Introduction
At the beginning of the pandemic, Seaman High School, in the Seaman Public School District north of Topeka, Kansas, began a search for a cleaning product that would clean and sanitize without leaving a chemical residue behind. Facility leadership in the district wanted to clean well enough to prevent a viral outbreak—without putting staff and students in harm’s way from overuse of chemicals.
"We wanted a product that would clean buses every hour, clean weight rooms every hour; we basically wanted to be cleaning the entire school hourly,” explains Jason Golder, Director of Facilities and Grounds for the school district. “One of our partners recommended we try Stabilized Aqueous Ozone (SAO®). We tried it and it clearly worked. We were one of the few schools in the area that remained open during the entire pandemic. We had no outbreaks.”
SAO is a simple, safe, sustainable way to clean, sanitize, and deodorize without using harmful chemicals. Created on-demand through patented tersano technology, SAO starts as tap water, is converted into a cleaner and germ killer for up to 24 hours, and then reverts safely to water. Opportunity
The Seaman Public School District offers learning opportunities for over 4,000 students across nine schools from pre-K through high school. The buildings and grounds team is a staff of 41, with 33 focused on custodial responsibilities. The staff cleans over 100,000 square feet of space every day. “The byproduct of the switch to SAO has been a cleaner school district,” states Golder.
Action
“We now only have one product in use on our carts instead of four or five. It’s just a simpler way to clean,” says Golder. Cleaning and sanitizing with one product instead of rotating through multiple bottles means the staff is more productive and the high school is sanitized five days per week. Prior to the switch, the school was cleaned four days per week and sanitized just one day per week.
The facilities staff at Seaman High School is pleased with the transition to non-toxic cleaning, sanitizing, and deodorizing solution—which went smoothly thanks to a focus on education and training. “We started slowly, created a buy-in amongst a small team, and then let word-of-mouth take over. Everyone who uses SAO believes it works. They can see it,” says Golder. “I can’t see a reason why we would return to using traditional cleaning chemicals.”
